These kinds of public announcements of private things always make me tick. Why do they do it? Why not just leave at note at Pats (thats the name just under 'B-day') front door or simply send him a traditional birthday card? Well, because this is so much more fun. The idea of other people seeing the poster and wondering who the hell Pat is probably amuses his friends. Maybe they take pleasure in trying to embarras Pat as he rides by on his bike and realises that the poster-message is for him. Haven't read the much disccussed 'the rise of the creative class' and not what might be a sort of danish equivalent either (yet) - 'Creative Man' - but have been coming across some related material - like today a report by DEMOS ('Demos is an independent think tank with a long-standing interest in changing attitudes to work and leisure') on so-called Pro-Ams (?!) - that is the impact of enthusiastic amateurs on society and culture.

I can't decide how to relate to the above. In a way I do think that new media and technology have changed - and in some ways improved - the conditions for creativity. Certainly a lot of people are using tech in creative ways, and a lot of different tech-innovators design technology based on the assumption that people will want to be creative.
The movie was really good in a number of ways. Having never heard of the yes men before, I was quite taken aback by their highly humourous and very daring strategy of 'identity theft'. Their inherently political (but not very sophisticated and not especially well argued) struggle against the WTO and globalisation in general (sic!) was fine activism and probably also fine art in a way.

Afterwards there was a panel discussion with artists Jakob Boeskov (of Danes for Bush etc.), Hans Bernhard (of Etoy etc.) and a media activist, Nikolaj something, from Globale Rødder. It was interesting because the panelists had very different conceptions of art, politics and the impact one can expect from something like the Yes Men. For instance it was raised to which extent the movie was able to engage and grap the audience and in some way show them possible ways of moving forward or if this was the goal at all. Some people thought it was a great laugh but not so much more.

I came to think of the fact that the movie (in its subject at least) was not so different from different journalistic efforts to describe, document and maybe ultimately change organisations like WTO. Often times journalists are (like the Yes Men) motivated by some sort of political agenda in choosing which people and instutions to examine or go after. But considered as a piece of journalism the movie failed, of course. Certainly if the aim was to reveal the true inner workings of WTO and the proces of globalisation the movie was not very succesfull at all.

Then today I came across a recent radio-broadcast in which the other part of Danes for Bush journalist Mads Brügger, took part in a completely different discussion in which the Danes for Bush project was judged in the light of journalistic methods and ethics. And in my opinion Brügger didnt have a very good case. I enjoyed Danes for Bush in much the same way I enjoyed the Yes Men, but I'm not to sure about its journalistic qualities. Like Brügger was asked on the radio: 'What did you reveal (by use of the fake identities and behaviours) that you could not have revealed by means of traditional journalism?". Brügger did try to answer that, but I for one was not convinced.

Not once did Brügger present the idea that Danes for Bush was something other, or something more, than an unusual form of journalism. Even though, to me, the tv-program could also easily be put into categories of activism or even art (As Boeskov noted yesterday the Danes for Bush project was highly inspired by the Yes Men).

And then the question of goals and impact would change somewhat. Then the impact would not (only) have be journalistic revelations and disclosures but one could also instead focus on the (artistic and activistic) strategies of subversions and the kind of impressions and experiences they bring to the audience.

Could there be something like an activistic and even artistic journalism?

Journalism = community ?

Jonathan Dube at Cyberjournalists seem to think so.

We Media = a new golden age of journalism?

I øvrigt meget sjovt at læse Nissens levnedsbeskrivelse. Not to me. Being a big fan of Dunne / Rabys idea of critical design I was thrilled to come upon this article by Adam Greenfield of V-2.org. He suggests that moving away from designing functionalities on the basis of traditional use cases and scenarios and instead trying to take into account the wider social context of everyday life migth open up for some interesting opportunities. Couldn't agree more, although I am not sure Greenfield would follow me down the path towards designing for social friction.

The Greenfield article is part of the latest issue of Receiver, which I can only recommend once again. Came to think of it via a visit to another tech-magazine /e-zine - the BT Technology Journal, in which Dana Boyd and Judy Donath of the MIT Sociable Media Group has an article on the presentation of idenity in online social networking systems with the nefty title Public Displays of Connection.

Bonus: What the Sociable Media Group (or Judy Donath at least) mean by 'Sociable Media'.

Political foundation of Situationism

Went to see Mikkel Bolt lecture on Situationism at KUA today. Must say hes a very competent lecturer in this field - not often you go through 3 hours of presentation and in the end really have no further questions. He seemed to explain himself with just the right amount of clarity and detail.

Anyway, the topic today was the political foundation of Situationism and how the situationists tried to battle the reversal of history (ca. 1930 as fascism, nazism and consumerism defeated the 'true' revolutionary movement and momentum and brought about cultural and societal transgression = Society of the Spectacle) and bring history back on track towards the revolution.

We were taken back to the very roots of notions of communism / socialism in political theory (ca 1830, 1840 if I remember correctly) , via contemplation of Marxs idea of communism, the struggle and rivalry between communism, syndicalism and anarchism (1920s), and on to the the manipulation and defamation of Marx's ideas by Lenin, Stalin and Soviet Communism altogether (according to the situationists). All very interesting aspects of political history.

Finally a discussion of some actual results of situationism, like Jorns and Debords 'Fin de Copenhaque', some of Jorns re-working of existing paitings by use of the technique of detournment and the inherently amusing events sorrounding the presentation of Gallizios 'industrial painting' in Paris in 1959 (I think). At that occasion the situationists general attemt to break down the (corrupted) institution of art manifested itself in the complete furnishing of the walls, floor and ceiling of the gallery with this sort of very long role of painting. They wanted to sell the piece by measurement ('I would like two feet of painting, please') but some ignorant art-collectors didn't get the idea and just bougth the whole thing.

According to Bolt some situationists even tried to sell pieces of the painting like newspapers in the street, but this was opposed by the owner of the gallery. Of course, at a later point Gallizio was expelled from the situationist movement largely due to the unfortunate result of the Paris incident.

In general I find myself continously amused by all these serious men with their hysterical rhetorics. So often things just didn't turn out the way they would have liked and mostly this was due to their own behind-the-back denounciations of each other, the very activity of art-making and the general public. Of course their basic project; integrate art in the everyday and mobilize the masses for revolution, was a no-go from the beginning. Havn.

En masse interessante vinkler dukkede op undervejs. Heriblandt:

Forstaderne flytter til byen;

For og imod borgerinddragelse;

Behovet for uregulerede zoner;

McLuhan festival

Why aren't I in Toronto right now? I kind of surprised myself by not going before, but I guess all the talk and hype had sort of put me off. Generally I thought I pretty much knew what to expect. An entertaining, refreshingly in-your-face, completely biased and probably very manipulative attack on Bush and his politics. The entertainment, in-your-faceness and bias turned out to be right on, but I actually didn't find the level of manipulation to be critical, with the exception of a few things. Like the depiction of pre-war Iraq as a sort of happy haven with laughing and joyfull children playing with their kites and such. Also I really didn't expect any new information to be revealed, and in a way it didn't.

On the other hand, compared to 'Bowling for Columbine' which I also very much enjoyed, I actually think, that Moore this time takes his rhetorics to a somehow different level. Leaving the movie theater I had this feeling that the main issue in Fahrenheit is the question of agenda. What is the 'real' agenda behind the patriot act, the war in iraq, the connection between the Bushes and the saudies etc.? I'm not gonna get behind that idea that Bush and his compatriots are simply evil, but I have no doubt that their motivations have a lot more to do with money (of course), corporate and political power (suprise!), probably oil, some degenerated idea of leadership and american values, some even more degenerated idea of resolve, the justification of force etc. Generally I tend to be very pessimistic as to the political culture in the US, and I sadly have only a little hope that someone like Kerry has some way of turning the thing around....

After the movie I had one of these discussions with a friend, that always makes me think that I need more politics in my life. I have always very much enjoyed political discussion whenever it occurs, but for some reason it doesn't happen as much as it used to. Something to do with age or just simply moving on into different situations and settings?

Being pre-occupied at the moment with often very theoritical aspects of technology, urbanism, journalism, space (sig!) etc. I once in a while have to ask myself where to find the real-world connection, to real-world problems. As a result of this nagging dissatisfaction (in lack of a better word) I have actually just 'turned myself in' to a political party for the first time in my life (ie: I have become a member)! I wont tell you which pary, but I'm sure some of you can guess it pretty easily. So now, of course, I have all these ideas of turning up to the meetings etc. Time will tell...

Understand french anyone?

Apparently an interesting 'event' is taking place in Paris at the moment. Its a pretty simple but very appealing idea of annotating the city by means of stickers with unique IDs. Via mobile phones (SMS) people can attach and retrieve messages to the stickers and as such a form of 'communicative graffiti' being both digital and physical at the same time is created. It very much resembles some of our own ideas....

The Supertanker-meeting itself was quite inspiring. I heard a few good presentations, and quite a few unimpressive ones. On the other hand this conference-thing seems to be as much about meeting colleaques, discuss, socialize and so on. And in that regard IR is a quite fine session, I guess. Lots of participants from a wide range of fields and with different angles on the subject of 'internet research'.

Our own presentation went alright. Although we didn't manage to get as far as we would have liked. Tried to raise the question of how to understand the 'cross-spatial' and cross-locational interaction that might take place between people situated in urban space and people on the net (cyberspace) in projects and games like Urban Tapestries and Mogi. Am thinking there is some sort of collapse between spatial ontologies at play. Will have to work more on that....

Off to IR 5.0

We will be presenting 'something' (not quite in place yet...:-)) at Internet Research 5.0 in Sussex the coming days, but actually I'm looking most forward to a bunch of interesting presentations by other people on a wide variety of internet-related stuff. For instance what in the We the Media- concept is 'just' a question of a number of new networks and channels opening up for new kinds of communications, and what is actually a question of journalism and journalists being changed?

Like Jens remarked afterwards Gillmore is not really that interested in discussing journalistic peculiarities (changing practices and products). He seems more into the tech-stuff, the changing networks and communications in general.

And in that regard he is certainly on to something. I liked the way he spent most of the talk discussing actual examples of his points. A list of these were sent out on the DONA-list the other day. Hope its okay to post it here....(all in Danish and I'm not sure about the links) :

Dan Gillmor: - Journalists have been shown by bloggers that they don't do asufficient job.

Hypergene MediaBlog:- No Disputing It: Blogs Are Major Players http://www.hypergene.net/blog/weblog.php?id=P209

E-Media Tidbits: Bloggers As Reporters
http://65.54.246.250/cgi-bin/linkrd?_lang=EN&lah=2a2ddb26a05b39bc335203b5293f78d6&lat=1095354304&hm___action=http%3a%2f%2fwww%2epoynter%2eorg%2fcolumn%2easp%3fid%3d31%26aid%3d71333

Gillmor at ITU

American journalist and tech writer Dan Gillmor visits ITU tomorrow on the rebound from the fagfestival of the Danish Association of Journalists. Copenhagen as 'emerging ubiquitous cities' in Europe. I wonder what he means.

It seems that he is often times most concerned with technological infrastructure and in that regard I generally dont think of Copenhagen as any more 'developed' than say other nordic or european capitals. Certainly we are nowhere near the korean u-City (and probably we should be glad...).

Maybe he heard of LaCoMoCo and Crossroads Copenhagen ????

NB!
Townsend also has an interesting post on the need to force all the promises of ubicomp into a real-world-context. Reminded me of Anna and Jens' paper on the viability of urban social technologies. These kinds of considerations are really needed. I say this with a hunch that I might sometimes myself stray into the dark lands of techno-fetischism.

Anyway, Towsend mentions the notion of 'everyday computing' as the name for the kind of thinking or the development of scenarios for a more responsible, sustainable and sociallly and culturally 'useful' version of ubicomp (at least thats how I read him). Of course I come to think of our way of recognizing 'the everyday' as the place to look for the socio-cultural needs that can justify this ubiquitisation of technology. Not bad at all. My more architecturally knowledgeable friend Tau has his reservations towards these guys, but i must admit I kind of like a wild and somewhat prententious project like the one in Vejle (housing buildings the form of giant letters spelling out the name of the city - find it via their site). Often by means of excellent and insightfull writing, maybe due to fine photography or something else.

Many times this happens when I am searching for something particular via Google. Like today when a search for the oak room cocktail bar in Egegade brought back a link to this site of a guy called Christian also. Immediately his contemplation of Copenhagen and especially the discussion of the inherently Danish (or so we like to think) socio-cultural phenomena of 'hygge' caught my attention.

For instance he lists different bars and places in the city by means of the categories of 'action hygge' and 'genuine hygge', even 'soul hygge'. It might not make much sense to foreigners and the information is a bit dated, but is a fine read anyway....

Det nye IT Universitet

Look what we missed

Situationistiske løsblade på Nørrebro - damn!

How to publicize what you do

Being a journalist by training I find it natural to try to take whatever work I do into the public sphere in some way. I find the construction of academic papers pleasantly challenging and satisfying but I certainly would also like to approach the (academic) issues that concern my from a more journalistic angel. At one point I tried to treat the issues of our thesis (at least partly) in the text 'Tilbage til virkeligheden' (in Danish obviously) which I hoped would be a 'kronik' in a major newspaper. Unfortunately the one paper I had in mind had tons of texts in stock and I haven't gotten around to shorten the text to make it fit in other papers.

In a slightly different approach we have now and then considered what kinds of magazines etc. that might be appropriate for works on 'digital urbanism' and the like. Recently we have met people involved in the Kulturo magazine, which is definitely one option and just today I received notice of the upcoming third issue of In the Red. Certainly a number of the Danish (and international, of course) cultural magazines are options as well. There is one problem, though. Being a journalist I generally like to get paid for what I write, and that is unlikely in most of the above mentioned instances....

Exurbia i Agenda

Excellent arrangement with Tremolo Beer Gut, Powersolo, John Spencer and Tiger Tunes as my favorites. Kind of nice to see hordes of danes travelling to Sweden to experience some culture, instead of the usual idea of 'Cool' Copenhagen forcing the poor swedes to cross the sound. They could definitely do better on the beer side of things though. Expensive and simply not strong enough.....

In other news I am gearing up for my debut as 'ekstern lektor' at University of Southern Denmark, where I will be teaching webjournalism next semester.

Schoking Update!!
Lad mig her opfordre alle til at kigge derud.
